What is the composition of billiard balls?

Pool balls are used in billiard games. These balls can be made from many materials but most often are made of phenolic. Phenolic resin is a combination of formaldehyde & phenol. These two compounds have a reputation for being durable and resistant to scratching. The mixture can withstand high temperatures. When exposed to the sun, the resin will begin to fade and yellow.

The first pool ball was made from wood. These balls were tough, but they crack with age. Leo Baekeland, an engineer and chemist created a new type of plastic that was non-flammable in the 19th century. This material was soon called bakelite and it quickly replaced wood in the production of pool balls.

The creation of pool balls was an expensive process. The development of the balls took a lot of time. One could easily cut the ball in half to see what it contained. The balls needed to be formed under high pressure.

After the initial version of bakelite was invented, other inventors began to experiment with chemical compounds to make pool balls. These innovations were some of the most important in the history of synthetic plastics.

While phenolic is a great choice for pool balls it comes at a higher price than its polyester equivalent. If you don't mind spending a lot on pool ball, then the polyester alternative might be the best for you. However, the polyester option is not as durable as phenolic.

It takes approximately 23 days to make a phenolic ball. Each step is carefully examined to ensure that there are no impurities. Also, phenolic resin balls can store in lower temperatures than polyester balls. They are more durable, last longer and are thus more long-lasting.

Aramith is the largest manufacturer of phenolic pool balls. The balls made from phenolic resin are durable and will retain their shine for up 40 years. They are also cheaper than polyester balls. Aramith Premier has superior resin technology, and should be considered by those who wish to upgrade to a better set of balls.

Iszy is another pool ball manufacturer that uses both phenolic resin and polyester resin. These pool balls cost less than phenolic ones, but don't retain their shine as well. Polyester balls are also more likely to fade and create burn spots on your table. However, they are still a great option for beginners.

Predator Arcos (another manufacturer) uses a proprietary compound to create a variety phenolic rubber balls. In addition, these balls are through-hardened, so they are more dense. You can opt for the Iszy marble swirl set, if you're looking to save money.

Many companies want to recreate the ivory billiards ball experience. However, the ivory material is no longer available. Modern pool balls are made of phenolic and formaldehyde. Today, approximately 85% are phenolic.
